Seems like yesterday,

drumming for The Soul Assassins!

The East Village NYC music scene was raging and the band's van driver was a fun kid named Jesse Malin. D-Generation and the Soul Assassins both practiced at Giorgio Gomelski's, who'd been a player in guiding English rock, while managing the Yardbirds when Beck was king and running a cool club.

I started drumming as a toddler on pots and pans probably because the house was always full of music and musicians...

I was surrounded by music. At 6 years old, older brothers took me to see Buddy Rich. Receiving Buddy's autograph, seeing Buddy up-close and personal was transformative.

With an endless supply of 'toy' drums and drum sets.. the first "real" kit appeared at 6 years old -  A Slinglerland 5 piece, marine pearl set with Zildjian cymbals. Wow. Wish I had that kit today!

Self-taught at first, absorbing idols’ tricks and techniques, tapping them out over and over on table tops, counters and drum kit. Hungry for more knowledge, I sought out and found the renowned pro drummer and session player, Gary Chester. I studied with Gary for several years. Gary and his students (we) helped Gary write the now famous book -

The New Breed.

I started playing with bands early on -  getting together with the neighborhood kids at first, then expanding, I started my first 'cover band' at 10 years old. We played a lot. I started playing all over the tri-state area, NY, PA, NJ...high school parties and dances, eventually sneaking into clubs to do gigs (and sneak some drinks too! ;)

I began gigging in New York City. Developed live drumming chops in all the great clubs of New York City.

From Harlem to Hell's Kitchen and beyond, I drummed at CBGB's, the Pyramid Club, the China Club, Limelight, the Milk Bar, Area, The Dive, Kenny’s Castaways (one booking included a surprise appearance by Jaco Pastorious), and many, more, I began Developing and cultivating great feel and a deep soulful pocket with a high level of musicianship across a broad range of styles. (not the "speed" drummer or technical as much as focusing on groove)

I'm grateful to have played all over the United States, and in the late 90's met with singer, songwriter Gregg Swann. We began writing and performing around the tri-state area's clubs and college campuses.

We met and became managed by Robert Singerman (Known for developing talent and new music business technologies, as an entrepreneur, agent, manager, label executive, consultant, producer, and music supervisor, Singerman represented R.E.M., Gipsy Kings, James Brown, Suzanne Vega, Violent Femmes, 10,000 Maniacs, Smithereens, Fela Kuti, Bad Brains, pre-Beastie Boys, and King Sunny Ade, among many other artists, and companies

Singerman helped broker a deal with Polygram records and the touring began.

We toured in the states and Europe opening for some of the  amazing bands Singerman was involved with.

I've also had the honor to play with The Original Soul Assassins.

They toured nationally for years and at one gig in Ann Arbor, Mi, opened up for The Butthole Surfers in front of 50,000 people at the Annual Ann Arbor Hash Bash.

I moved to California briefly in '95 and got to play with the awesome band The Fancy Lads. We played all the clubs up and down the Strip and more. The Whiskey, Roxy, Troubadour, we were busy...the band split and so did I. I returned to Ca. in 2006 and continue to play locally, regionally and nationally as a valuable side-man playing with dozens of bands. My passport and I are ready to head-out on the next adventure!

Sharing what I know with others is also a passion of mine. In-person, Skype and Face Time. I'll teach anyone who wants to learn the art of drumming. All you need is a pair of sticks!
Thanks for checking this out...I hope to hear from you soon!
Peace~
